Chaguanas, Trinidad is not only known for being the largest and fastest growing borough in Central Trinidad but also as the birthplace of Samuel “Farenite” Selkridge. His mom dedicated him to the service of the Lord after he was born, sort of like when Hannah did her son, the Prophet Samuel.
Both his mother and father, nutured him in the fear and admonition of the Lord. A common scene in the midst of the Selkridge household back then, were family bible studies, that he Samuel was very much a part of. He was your typical church going youngster, and emerging musician who even played the drums some, at his local church.
Throughout those early years he harnessed a passion, an appetite for the things of God, but the traps of adolescence drew him further away. However, it was the "fervent prayers" of his loving mother and others that remained the point of reference for his later return to his first love.
“My mom always prayed for me, my grandmother and great grandmother who is now approaching 100 years, an intercessor, strong woman of God; she always say to me that, only what you do for God lasts.”
These powerful words of truth embedded into the soul of this young man...remained a source of light for his life...a foundation that he could not escape even if he wanted to. The bible tells us that the child must be trained in the way he must go because as he matures he will certainly not depart from it. He is the evidence of this, proving true today.
Coming into his own as a young man, now working a bit Samuel discovered a gift that he never knew was there one faithful day...
He candidly recalls this moment as if it were yesterday:
“I saw some guys drumming by a table at a St. George's College classroom, and it drew me in, they were not saved and they were engaged in a freestyle battle...I decided to jump in and the guy I battled just demolished me..hahaa....I said to myself, "I not taking this"....So I sharpened my skills...and went back another day...and ended up winning the battle...So I became known for that; won many competitions in schools and my popularity began to increase."
After being in several relationships...he began to reflect on the course of his life, and concluded that these things were "not making any sense".
On Janury 24th 2009 at 5:30am, was when it all changed for him. Samuel, went near a mango tree heard and he said to himself that his life is going down a dead end.
"This is a time for rededication...and I wrote down everything that I've done wrong on a piece of paper and burned it up...then went full force into a relationship with God".
Stanshaw: What is the meaning behind the name "Farenite"?
While searching for a name one day "Farenite" came to him. He had an interest in fire that made it easy for him to adapt such a name.
"Farenite is Heat and Light. The Light of God and the fire of the Holy Ghost. When you measure for temperature...in the conversion from Celcius to Fahrenheit...the Fahrenheit is always more....Even though we exist in a physical world with others who seem to have the same qualities...it is my conversion through grace that causes me to do more....
Stanshaw: What defines life for you?
"Outside of Christ there is nothing, lust of the flesh, pride of life..are distractions...systems set up to distract you from what God has placed on the inside of you as a seed. It reminds you at the end of the day that fleshly decisions lead to death but the greater you want to accomplish is connected to him."
Stanshaw: Where do you see your ministry going?
"God said to me, you are called to be an Apostolic Minister, to pioneer, break new ground....so I will host events.....not just singing...It gives me more room to operate...I see my ministry going towards a firm structure......tangible......one that can be engaged with..something solid that people can tap into and benefit from."
Stanshaw: The Lord has been speaking to me about persons within our nation and region who have abandoned dreams, visions...due to a lack of faith...etc...or even the challenges of limited resources...and the fact that there are some who even hinder others from pursuing what is within.
What would you say to those with dreams?
"Come to a place where you are sure that God is the one who called you to do it...what you are seeking...that God called you to do it...Develop a relationship with the Lord, interact with ministry gifts that enable you to extract what you have been called to in this earth.
Evil, wickedness, an adversary exists...know you will be fought, but God gives you the grace, resources to carry it out...know there will be a fight. Seek the Lord for definite and specific instructions.
We often get an introductory word...then we shake hands with it..and then run off...then the fight comes...and then we start thinking that we may not have heard from the Lord. 1 John 5:4 tells us that what is born of God overcomes the world by faith...God will give you strategies...God will show you the way and cause you to overcome, conquer every challenge." Stanshaw: What do you hear the Lord saying in this season, especially for our region?
"In terms of our knowledge of him...there will be a growth. Ephesians 4:11speaks about the Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, Teachers...for the perfecting of the saints. So we will grow into maturity. A lot of us are doing "seat ministry", we don't want to launch out into the deep....cast the net again...I hear the Lord saying in this season...that we really need to trust him...move away from our own systems, traditional way of doing things.
Peter was to start a revolution...bring the gospel to the Gentiles...and the Lord through a vision showed him that he was not to call them unclean. We have to break out of the shackles and chains of religion.
It's time for the radicals! He is causing the youths to arise, take up their mantles...he's telling the Moses' to give the Joshua's a chance...so we can move into that perfection and maturity."
Stanshaw: What project are you working on right now?
"I have a compilation called, "Real (No Pharisee)" with seventeen tracks like "When I Wake"...It's available on Itunes now. Also I've started working on my new album, "Rise Of The Champion". The true champion....champion of champions....is Jesus Christ and with him in you....you can rise and become a champion. It's about stepping into your purpose...to challenge believers and the unsaved...because only as a son of God can you truly overcome."
Stanshaw: Are there any persons whom you are colloborating with on this album?
They are currently in the conception stage..brainstorming and laying down ideas. He has persons in mind to collborate with but nothing is concrete as yet.
Stanshaw: When do you anticipate a release?
"I anticipate a release in the last quarter of this year."
Stanshaw: Any musical influences?
"I would have to say Papa San...you know...being on the frontline as a man from the Caribbean...going from secular to Gospel....how he has been colloborating with major artists like Fred Hammond and the Da T.R.U.T.H.....His level of success...I'm definitely taking note of every step. Also I love...Koen Duncan, Dj Nicholas, Da T.R.U.T.H....amomg others."
